Summertime, Gershwin on Piano ! what an unusual, but delightful version of
that so well known music ( often sang by Billie Holiday and Ella
Fitzgerald) . i also apreciate “amateur” versions that can be so near to
the authentic piano score, slowly, quietly, so that we can hear each
footsteps on home’s stairs , so that we can observe each wing’ s feather
spreading !. Anyway, both of these renditions are welcome. In the
original musical score we can hear the most important parts of this
composition, the jazz one and the Klezmer style, so essential for
Gershwin. That is his own, so intense so real,of course. Very respectable in
this way of meaning, what a high musical expression, what a deep and
sensitive early composition. Yes, to travel in those area means to cross
through history of Europe and Russia ( his parent’ s beginnings).
St Petrsburg lives into that piece of music, towards his jazz actuality.
Soul is full as much as it can be with Maurice Ravel, our national pianist
in France. In spite of he met him successfuly a little bit later, Gershwin
had early his own way so near to Ravel ! A brotherhood musical expression,
i Think. Ravel told him ” why would you have to become a second Ravel ,
since i tell you to become the first Gershwin ? ….here it is !
The “blues” is also living in Klezmer style, how would it be different, how
could it be hidden? Such a ground state, a fundamental soul. “Jacob
Gershowitz” was born in America, in 1898, he was absolutly opened to any
musical style an arrangement, able to mix influences in a positive
creation. Not so common ! Here is a genius, an affective genius, a friend
that we would have loved to met, here is the rare bird ! There is a similar
way of rendition with Zoltan Kodaly, who cared of the traditional customs
in Hungary, precious values, so opened to an original story. Both of them
have something to say, They do not compose for the “wind or smoky blues
seemings”. Gershwin is not a special guest of music, he is a great man of
life, he is the gift, and did so much for every one, any history, .
